Academics for Higher Education
Academics for Higher Education and Development’s
(AHED) mission is to support developing countries build and expand institutional strength in higher education.
It fulfills its mission by sending volunteers to work on projects in the full range of post-secondary institutions –
in universities, colleges, and professional and technical schools – and in all areas of instruction including among
others, humanities, pure and applied science, engineering, business administration, medicine and nursing.
AMURT Global Network
AMURT was founded in India
in 1965. Its original objective was to help meet the needs of victims of disasters that regularly hit the Indian sub-continent.
AMURT now has teams in 80 countries, working in disaster relief, sustainable development and community service. Highly recommended
by GHIG, they welcome volunteers from many fields and offer positions around the world.
BUY-A-NET Malaria Prevention Group
Buy-A-Net.ca is a volunteer charitable organization with a mission to prevent and treat malaria,
one village at a time.
In partnership with community based groups, long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets and
anti-malaria medicines are distributed free-of-charge, saving lives from malaria, one village at a time.
Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research
"CCGHR is a not-for-profit organization
promoting better and more equitable health worldwide by mobilizing greater Canadian investment and involvement in global health
research, nurturing productive partnerships among Canadians and people from low- and middle-income countries,
and turning research into action." Their website offers a Funding Roadmap, which "contains summary information about
funding sources for global health projects, including eligibility criteria, application procedures and contact information."
Canadian Global Health Network
The AGHN "Connects you with global health efforts at home and abroad".
The website allows people to post their global health experiences, projects and opportunities for others to review.
Canadian Medical Assistance Teams
Through
its projects, CMAT ratifies the Humanitarian Charter signed originally in 1997, and aspires to attain the standards determined
by the Sphere Project, which are based on two core beliefs:
a) All possible steps should be taken to alleviate human suffering arising out of calamity and conflict; and
b) Those affected
by disaster have a right to life with dignity and therefore a right to assistance.
Moreover, CMAT strives to adhere to the International Code of Conduct and
to the humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and solidarity in the implementation of its medical
relief and development projects.
Canadian Network for International Surgery
The Canadian Network
for International Surgery is a non-profit
organization that provides surgical and obstetrical training, and continuing education for perioperative
nurses, enabling African health
practitioners to prevent suffering and save millions of lives each year. CNIS believes in sharing expertise to promote lasting and sustainable improvements
in health in the developing world. CNIS
sends volunteer Canadian surgeons, obstetricians, and perioperative nurses to share their knowledge with African colleagues, who then go on
to teach these same skills to medical students, clinicians and trainees, and perioperative nurses. This train-the-trainerapproach provides cost-effective hands-on techniques. So far, over 15,000
African health practitioners have been taught our life-saving procedures.
Canadian Society for International Health
"Founded in 1977, the Canadian Society
for International Health (CSIH) is a national non-governmental organization that works domestically and internationally to
reduce global health inequities and strengthen health systems. CSIH members share a common interest and commitment to
global health, global health research, and international development. Members include individuals and organizations representing
a broad spectrum of experience in various disciplines. [...] Through the engagement of its members and partners, CSIH endeavors
to bring together various communities engaged in global health in order to promote a collective agenda."
CUSO-VSO
CUSO-VSO promotes sustainable development
through international volunteering.Our
volunteers come from many professional and personal backgrounds, from many ages, and from across Canada and the United States
as well as from many of the Southern countries in which we work. As
a member of VSO International, we work with developing world organizations and governments to identify areas of greatest
need, and then collaboratively develop strategic volunteer positions. Volunteers work with overseas partner groups on
locally and nationally managed projects. This way, the benefits of their work continue to be felt by local people long after
the volunteers have passed on their skills and returned home.
Global Alliance for Nursing & Midwifery - Listserv
The Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery is an online community which
enables practitioners in global health the ability to network, discuss and post announcements on current issues, challenges,
and topics of interest in their field. You must register an account in order to view the current message boards and post to the group.
CNA launched a
new database Global Nursing Connections for Canadian nurses and nursing organizations interested and/or active in
global health. The database provides accessible information, submitted by nurses for nurse, about projects, programs and expertise
in global health.
Idealist.org
Action without Borders: A fantastic website, highly recommended
by CAIN's president, for individuals seeking an international experience and organizations seeking volunteers. Idealist
is a project of Action Without Borders, and on the site you will find:
- Over 58,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 165 countries, which you can search or browse
by field of work, name, location, or mission.
- Thousands
of volunteer opportunities in your community and around the world, and a list of organizations that can help you volunteer
abroad.

International Policy and Development, CNA
"CNA's department of International Policy and Development collaborates with the International
Council of Nurses, and other international nursing and health development organizations, to ensure that the expertise of Canadian
nurses contributes to the advancement of global health and equity."
Global Health Council
The Global Health Council is "the world's largest
membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health throughout the world. Membership is comprised of health-care
professionals and organizations that include NGOs, foundations, corporations, government agencies and academic institutions
that work to ensure global health for all."
Médecins Sans Frontières
Canada (MSF): MSF is the world's leading independent international medical relief
organization. Their mandate primarily concerns emergency relief. MSF launches operations in areas where there is no medical
infrastructure or where the existing one cannot withstand the pressure to which it is subjected. In most cases, relief programs
change to rehabilitation projects that may run for several years after the most urgent needs have been met.
The Kenya Ceramic Project
The Kenya Ceramic Project is an exciting new international health pilot project aimed at introducing
innovative ceramic water filters and high efficiency wood burning stoves to rural areas of Kenya. With the help of local NGOs
and health clinics, potters in these areas will be trained to make the filters and stoves, in the hopes of increasing access
to clean water and more efficient use of available fuels. The project began in the fall of 2007 and is led by students from
the University of Alberta in conjunction with Life for Relief and Development and International Health Initiatives by Medical
Students (IHIMS).
Okanagan-Zambia Healthi Initiative - OKAZHI
OkaZHI aims to build collaborative efforts between Canada and Zambia with the
end goal of improving the health of Zambian people through the support of locally identified priorities and enhancement of
both Canadian and Zambian expertise and capacities. With an emphasis on education using an interprofessional approach, OkaZHI
works to achieve this goal through partnerships with government, non- governmental organizations, universities, research
institutions, communities and the private sector in Zambia and Canada.
One Nurse at a Time is a 501 (c)(3) non
profit organization based in Seattle, WA which was created by nurses who are passionate about giving back to the local and
global community through volunteer and humanitarian medical pursuits. They are dedicated to assisting other nurses enhance
our profession as they too, look for opportunities to serve locally, nationally and internationally. They have a DIRECTORY of organizations
offering volunteer opportunities for nurses.
World Health Professionals Alliance
The World Health Professions Alliance, speaking
for more than 23 million health care professionals worldwide, assembles essential knowledge and experience from the
key health care professions. The WHPA aims to facilitate collaboration between key health professionals and major international
stakeholders such as governments, policy makers and the World Health Organization. By working in collaboration, instead
of along parallel tracks, the patient and health care system benefit.
